Short answer: vendors quote $50,000โ€“$120,000 for a full scoring, lighting, and POS refresh at a small entertainment venue. The hardware inside those systems โ€” sensors, LED drivers, a controller, a computer โ€” costs $2,000โ€“$3,000as commodity parts in 2026. What a "control system" at a small venue actually is

Strip the branding off any legacy venue control cabinet โ€” bowling scorers, mini-golf scoring posts, arcade redemption networks, gym class-lighting controllers โ€” and you find the same four layers: sensors that detect a ball, a score, or a swipe; outputs like displays, lamps, and printers; a controller that connects the two; and a front desk computer running scheduling and POS. In systems installed between 1995 and 2015, the controller is typically a custom board or an industrial PC, the sensors are ordinary photoelectric or piezo parts with a markup, and everything talks over serial cable.

None of this is exotic. The exact same functions are served today by microcontrollers like the ESP32 (about $8), addressable LED strips (about $3 per meter), and any mini-PC (under $200). The technical gap between the $87,000 cabinet and the commodity stack has effectively closed; the price gap has not.

1. The incumbent vendor refresh: $50kโ€“$120k.If your system still has a vendor, their quote covers new proprietary controllers, licensed software, certified installation, and a mandatory support contract ($300โ€“$800/month is common). You are paying mostly for the fact that only they can service what only they sell. 2. The independent integrator: $25kโ€“$60k.A local AV or controls integrator will happily replace the system with commercial DMX lighting gear, PLCs, and an off-the-shelf POS. Better than the incumbent, but PLC-based builds carry industrial part pricing (a PLC doing an ESP32's job costs 20ร— as much), and you still end up dependent on the one integrator who understands the install.

3. The commodity retrofit: $2kโ€“$5k in parts. One ESP32-class controller per hole, lane, or station; addressable LEDs for lighting; PoE networking back to a local mini-PC that runs the scoreboard and POS. When you compare options, the sticker price is the smaller half of the math. Legacy systems bill a service contract forever โ€” $500/month is $30,000 over five years. Every repair waits on the vendor's technician and the vendor's parts stock; owners of discontinued systems report multi-week outages waiting for refurbished boards on eBay. A commodity retrofit inverts this: any failed part is $5โ€“$25, in stock everywhere, and swappable by whoever changes your light bulbs. What a DIY-with-blueprint swap really involves

Honest scope: this is a low-voltage electronics project, not a weekend craft. You (or your handyman) will mount enclosures, run Cat6 and LED cable, connect screw terminals following per-station diagrams, and flash firmware over USB. Budget one to two days per zone. Two boundaries matter. First, mains power: anything on the wall-outlet side of a power supply is licensed-electrician work โ€” a good blueprint marks that line explicitly. Second, safety-critical systems: rides and attractions with safety interlocks are regulated territory and should never be a DIY retrofit; scoring, decorative lighting, and POS carry no such risk.

Decision rule of thumb

If your venue has fewer than ~50 stations and the broken system handles scoring, lighting, or POS: get the vendor quote, then price the commodity retrofit โ€” the delta is usually a factor of 20โ€“40ร—.
